Showcase Sunday #11

It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

This Showcase Sunday was actually meant for last week, so really it should be called 'Last-Showcase Sunday'! 
While looking for a friends birthday present last week, I got distracted by Waterstones and took full advantage of their 'buy one, get one half price' offer. I brought The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to read by the end of this month as a part of my yearly book challenge. 
I also picked up It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini. I saw the film version recently and completely fell in love with it. It's about a young boy who sets himself ridiculously high standards, as a result of which, suffers with depression. He admits himself into a psychiatric hospital, and the story explores his own journey as well as the people he meets there.

The Good Children - Roopa Farooki Review

The Good Children, as the title suggests, explores themes of obedience and duty. The book follows the lives of four siblings, two sisters and two brothers, and how they each come to terms with the crippling amount of responsibility and expectations their mother forces upon them.   The novel fully exposes each of their lives from childhood to parenthood. The character arches and psychological complexity of each is completely outstanding. There are so many different people in this book, and for each one to be emotionally and mentally whole, it's a credit to Roopa.    One of the main aspects of this book that I enjoyed the most was the relationship the siblings shared. Although all very different characters, they shared an unspoken and unbreakable bond. They have all experienced the weight of their cold mother's expectations and no one else in their world would understand that as well as each other.    I enjoyed this book, and my only criticism is that it's quite a long read to say that it was based purely on relationships, as opposed to a bigger event. Other than that, a very good read, with very interesting characters.

June Book Challenge: Mark Twain

I can't believe how quickly this year is going. We're almost half way through! 
It's June now, which means it's time for another reading challenge. If you're new to my blog, you won't know of my monthly reading challenges, but each month I read a book from the author displayed on my Waterstones wall calendar. 
This month is Mark Twain, which I'm really excited about because I've never read any of his work before. I haven't actually bought the book yet, but I'll be getting it this weekend on a mother-daughter shopping trip I've arranged. 
I'm not entirely sure which book to go for but I think I'm leaning towards The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. 
I really like this months quote and the weather we've been having recently completely matches it! t's not stopped raining at all today, but it's still very warm!
