Book buying ban update #1

It's almost been a month since I first declared that I was going on a six-month book buying ban.

"Why would you do that?!" I hear you cry. Well, my bookshelf has so many books that have been lying dormant and untouched for years. The thought of buying new books was always very appealing to me but what's the point of having books that you haven't even read?!

That being said, I've made a conscious effort to avoid book shops at. all. costs! I doubt that my resolution would have remained as strong if I'd have had a sneaky look in Waterstones. I'm also saving to move out (flat hunting is both exciting and stressful) and hopefully the extra money that I'll save from not buying books would help that.

Other than that, I'm doing pretty well. I haven't felt the need to rush out and buy a book just yet. Luckily, some work friends have lent me a stash of books to help fight off the buying temptation.

However, it is hard to see all the wonderful sounding new releases on blogs. But rather than mope about all the books I can't buy yet, I've made a Pinterest board of all the ones I'd like when it's over. Obviously, I'm not going to buy all of these (not all at once anyway!) but will definitely be treating myself once it's over.

So far there's:
  • Yes Please by Amy Poehler
  • Trouble by Non Pratt
  • How to Build a Girl by Caitlin Moran
  • Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham
  • All I Know Now by Carrie Hope Fletcher
  • Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kailing

I didn't mean to encompass the theme of funny woman, it's just something that happened naturally. I don't often read non-fiction either but I'm really excited for these as I look up to them all for different reasons. I'll be keeping the Pinterest board updated, so make sure you take a look throughout the ban.

What's your favourite book by a female author?

  1. *High five* Good job Amanda, I'm on a book buying ban too for four months. I did accidentally buy a book right at the start - it was 99p on Kindle though, but I completely forgot I was on a ban.
I loved Mindy's and Lena's books, it's so nice to see so many great female role models publishing books at the moment.

    1. Haha. I'm allowing myself at least one blunder if necessary. But it needs to be an amazing book for me to break it. I'm sure you can let a little 99p purchase slide. :)

I can't wait to read Mindy's book. The title alone is hilarious.

  2. I never read nonfiction, but sometimes I think I need to branch away from all my classics and YA fairy tales. I'll definitely be looking into some of these - thank you for the inspiration!

  3. A pinterest board is such a good idea! I put a ban on myself as well, though most of my books are YA books but I must have bought them for some reason so I'm not letting myself buy anything non educational (for school), until I read them all. I tend to buy books every week and I need to stop because I'm running out of room to put them and my wallet cries every time.

    1. Haha. I was in the exact same situation. It's good to have a little break and focus on the books you already have. :) x

  4. Stay strong Amanda! I'm also saving up to move out so I've been resisting buying anything that's not completely necessary - though I caved and bought two books today, so at least you're doing better than me!

    2. I got The Drowning and Water Born by Rachel Ward. I'm talking with her for the UKYAExtravanganza blog tour next month so need to catch up on her latest! I figured it was a good excuse to splash out a little x

  5. Ooh, this is a good idea! I've been avoiding book shops too, and haven't bought a single book in January! (Besides the two I got from my Christmas vouchers right at the beginning on the month - doesn't count!)
