NaNoWriMo - Week 1 update

It's the first week of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and I'm 14,000 words in! I can't believe it. It's crazy to think that a few months ago I tried to write 10,000 in a month for Camp NaNoWriMo and I've actually written more in just a week.

I've been using every spare moment to add scenes to my novel and it's really paid off. I always used to doubt people when they said that they had full time jobs but still managed to reach the 50,000 word count set out by NaNoWriMo but I've started to realise that it's definitely doable. And so much fun.

One of the things that's really helped is the NaNoWordSprint Twitter account. For an hour or two someone takes it over and offers short bursts of time for participants to reach a certain word count. For added fun sometimes a prompt or a challenge will be given for example "include a red hooded jacket in your next spirit". It's already given me so many ideas and it's great to see everybody's word count at the end of it.

Also, Scrivener! Oh my gosh, I can't recommend it enough for writers. It's a word processor that allows you to store all of your different documents that include character notes, research and random scenes and drag them around. You can also plan out your novel with its cork board feature. It's incredible and it's making writing an absolute joy.

Today's the only day this week that I've been struggling and doubted the quality of my words but rather than giving up, I just kept writing and feel awesome for doing so!

I'm going to be neglecting this blog for a little while this month and using it purely to post my weekly NaNoWriMo updates as that's my sole focus at the moment.

How's everybody else getting along? I'd love to know your word count as it stands!

  2. This sounds really cool! Are you gonna post your novel? I wish had known earlier but I"m still going to try and do this. It seems like a cool way to relax and get back into my writing. I'm going to have so much to catch up on but I'm sure it will be worth it! Also I tagged you in a post, so let me know if you wanna do that tag or not! Good luck!

  3. Ooh, awesome! I didn't think I'd have time this year because I have a lot of assignments due in the next month, but I think (if I had an idea!) I could've had a good go. Maybe next year...
